Kamathipura is a 14 lane red-light district and is one of the largest in all of Asia. This red-light area highlights the poor socio-economic situation that exists in the city of Mumbai. Recently the red light areas like Kamathipura have grown in size as many commercial and residential buildings have taken root in the area. Therefore there is a high demand for brothels and commercial sex work which in turn worsens the problems in the district.
There are many children in the brothel who have illness due to the lack of sanitation, sunlight, ventilation, etc. These poor living conditions pose a health scare for the children. Most of the time, women are busy with work and again, children are indirectly and directly affected.
We specifically chose to work in Kamathipura as mothers who are commercial sex workers and their children live together, which creates an at-risk environment for the children who become potential targets for trafficking. Our programmes in this community focuses on protecting and building the lives of these children and women
