Human Trafficking Interception Project – Sairang Railway Station
Project Location: Sairang, Aizawl District, Mizoram, India
Project Site: Sairang Railway Station (SANG), Northeast Frontier Railway
Protecting Vulnerable People at a Key Transit Point
Located approximately 12 km from Aizawl, Sairang Railway Station is Mizoram’s main railway terminus and an important transit point for people travelling into and out of the state. The movement of passengers through the station makes it an important location for preventing human trafficking and protecting children, women and other vulnerable individuals.
Through the Human Trafficking Interception Project at Sairang Railway Station, Oasis India works to identify people who may be at risk of trafficking, exploitation or unsafe migration and connect them with timely protection and support.
Identifying and Responding to Risk
Trained Transit Monitors work at the railway station to observe passenger movement and identify situations that may indicate trafficking or vulnerability. They engage with individuals sensitively, assess their immediate needs and take appropriate action when a person may be at risk.
Depending on the situation, Transit Monitors may:
- Identify and assess individuals who appear vulnerable or at risk of trafficking.
- Engage with children, women and other vulnerable passengers in a safe and sensitive manner.
- Provide immediate assistance and protection.
- Facilitate referrals to appropriate child protection and support services.
- Coordinate with relevant authorities and stakeholders for safe intervention.
- Support the safe handover and follow-up of identified cases where required.
Working Together for Protection
Effective trafficking prevention requires strong coordination. The project works closely with the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Government Railway Police (GRP), Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Childline, railway authorities, government departments and other relevant stakeholders.
This collaborative approach helps ensure that vulnerable individuals are identified early and connected to appropriate protection, care and support.
Raising Awareness and Preventing Trafficking
The project goes beyond interception. Public awareness and prevention are an important part of the work at Sairang Railway Station.
Passengers and communities are encouraged to understand the risks of human trafficking and unsafe migration, recognise possible warning signs, and make informed decisions when travelling or seeking employment opportunities.
By combining early identification, interception, immediate support, stakeholder coordination and awareness, Oasis India is working to make Sairang Railway Station a safer transit environment for vulnerable passengers.
