Support functions

Oasis India's three main areas of work, Outreach & Rescue, Transitional Care and Community Empowerment, are supported by Education & Training, Health care and Psychosocial Care

Oasis India also shares expertise and resources and partners with other like-minded organisations through it's Faithworks initiative.

Education & Training

Education and Training are key aspects to empowerment. From running balwadis (pre-school classes) in slum communities to training rescued sexually exploited women in tailoring and computers, Oasis attempts to empower its beneficiaries in the tried and tested and most efficient way.

Providing basic education to young children, is also a means to securing their future and rescuing them from the bondages of poverty. Meanwhile, as their mothers attend adult-literacy classes within the community and grasp the importance of being literate, there’s further encouragement for the young to dream big.

Moreover, women are provided with options to receive training in different skills to add to their family’s income. Training is also provided to rehabilitate women as they return back to mainstream society. Through training courses and computer classes at communities; Aari work , training in hospitality and house-keeping at transitional homes- Purnata Bhavan and Potter's wheel, Oasis provides the beneficiaries with personal assessment and followup.

Linked to the tailoring training programme in Bangalore is a unit that produces and sells fair-trade hand-made clothing and accessories under the brand name Jacobs Well. Find out more at www.jacobswell.biz

Health Care

Health is a concern in slum communities. With absolutely no hygiene awareness, families are found to struggle with illness and disease frequently. Moreover, illiteracy too adds to the complication when families do not understand the extent of the illness and fail to visit hospitals or good doctors.

Oasis, while working in communities, frequently set up awareness camps on HIV AIDS, Polio and Tuberculosis.

At the transitional care homes, we provide women and children with ARV Treatment for the HIV positive and also have philanthropic doctors visiting who advice on various health issues. Oasis also ties up with hospitals, who provide discounted or free medical care to communities and beneficiaries of Oasis India.

Psychosocial care

Regular counselling is a means by which the staff at Oasis maintains relationships with its beneficiaries. Women rescued from red-light areas have to deal with a lot of physical and emotional trauma. With disturbing past experiences, the only way beyond these hurts are through interactions with counsellors and peers who help them overcome their pasts and build-up a positive outlook towards the future.
