We’d be nowhere without community, the people around us that we eat with, share with, talk with, help out and rely on. Rebecca Swamickan, who heads up Oasis India in Chennai, says, ‘Our strength in community work has been initiating the concept of community itself, that your action affects others around you.’

Football crazy

In the SM Nagar slum community in Chennai, our focus is on young people. We build relationships through football coaching and encourage the boys to complete their schooling. Lack of education is a major issue in SM Nagar, with many children dropping out of school before receiving any qualifications.

Teach a man to fish and you feed him for life, as the well known saying goes.

In a slum in Chembur, central Mumbai, Oasis India is teaching community members their rights, so they can stand on their own feet and see justice done.
